Minnesota's Essential Skills Credential

Minnesota’s Essential Skills Credential program is for English Language Learning (ELL) students. If you complete the ELL program, you will earn an Essential Skills Credential from the state of Minnesota Department of Education.

What does my credential mean?

Your credential proves you have strong skills.  Use it on your resume.  Use it as you continue your education.

How does the program work?

When you take ELL and math classes at your Adult Basic Education site, you are working toward four certificates of achievement: Reading, Writing, Listening and Math. You will take tests in your English skills, math, and writing classes. When you pass level C on a test, you will earn a certificate in that skill. You complete the program and receive the full Essential Skills Credential when you earn all four certificates of achievement.

What are the tests?

  • CASAS Reading
  • CASAS Math
  • CASAS Writing
  • CASAS Listening

What classes will I take?

  • English Language Learning
  • Writing
  • Math

How long will it take me to complete the program?

Every student is different. It depends on

how much English you know when you

start and how much you study.

When will I get my credential?

You will receive a certificate from your instructor after you pass each test.  The certificate shows your name, tells the skills that you have, and is signed by the Director of Adult Basic Education.
