Best Practices for Teaching Speaking to ESL Students

 

  • Provide intriguing situations which spark the desire to speak

 

  • Provide situations in which students must go beyond the ‘yes-no’ response

 

  • Provide situations which require students to gather and produce specific information

 

  • Articulate a specific outcome or purpose for speaking

 

  • Integrate pronunciation into all class room activities

 

  • Constantly assess and respond to student difficulties in producing clear speech

 

  • Focus expectations on content rather than form

 

  • Provide structural guidelines and practice drilling, but don’t interfere with free communication
