Best Practices for Teaching Math to ESL Students
1) Make problems relevant to life 2) Teach the language of math to recognize what the question is asking 3) Have clear and consistent expectations 4) Build on the basics of addition, subtraction, multiplication, and division 5) Encourage more than 1 way to arrive at the same answer 6) Check frequently for understanding 7) Do not practice computation skills in isolation 8) Practice, practice, practice 9) Use hands-on manipulatives 10) Incorporate all learning strategies to account for visual and auditory learners 11) Encourage learners to recognize and use math in every day situations 12) Guide learners to ask, "Does this answer make sense?
